Irrigation 101 is an introductory course designed for new employees and others engaging with irrigated agriculture for the first time. The learning modules provide core knowledge about the industry’s methods, systems and practices, that will underpin day to day work on farm or in supporting roles elsewhere in the agricultural sector.

Irrigation 101 is an initiative of the Sustaining the Basin: Irrigated Farm Modernisation (STBIFM) project funded through the Australian Government's Sustainable Rural Water Use and Infrastructure Program and delivered by the NSW Department of Primary Industries. STBIFM aims to achieve water savings through greater on-farm water use efficiency that will improve the long term sustainability of regional communities.

The 101 modules provide an overview of key principles and practices in broadacre irrigation, across ten key areas:

  1. Irrigation background, concepts and practice
  2. Work health & safety
  3. Surface irrigation and distribution systems
  4. Pressurised irrigation systems
  5. Furrow irrigation and siphons
  6. Flow control and metering devices
  7. Soils
  8. Introduction to plants
  9. Pumps
  10. Irrigation scheduling.

Each module will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. Participants that complete all ten modules will receive a Certificate of Achievement.
